Poem of the Month

LEAVING HOME
by Gae Rusk

Off to the mainland
seeking a mid-sized city or
extra-large small town
to park my car
to hang my hat
to warm my toes
to melt the fat in my
torpid tropical heart
and light a fire under my prose

Off to the continent
for 104 weeks
to join that extra-large caucus race
to put me on edge
give me that tweak
make me leave safe and
after I land and find my feet
after I wake from relocating sleep
I‘ve decided I will decide from that brightly lit place
no more hedging my bets
no more hiding my face
